To provide a continuously variable transmission capable of selecting a change gear ratio characteristic corresponding to each shift stage in the manual shift mode according to driver's taste.

As shift patterns in the manual sift mode, a normal D shift pattern and a Ds shift pattern setting a fixed change gear ratio characteristic of the whole on a low geared side relative to the D shift pattern are stored. When a driver switches on a manual mode switch, range position of a select lever is detected (S3, S4). When the select lever is set in the D range, the D shift pattern is selected (S5), and when the select lever is set in the Ds range, the Ds shift pattern is selected (S6). A fixed change gear ratio corresponding to the shift stage selected by up-shift or down-shift based on the selected shift pattern is fixed as a target change gear ratio.
