To accomplish a structure in which a continuously variable transmission can be made compact and control during driving mode switching can be simplified.
Each of a low-speed clutch 35a and a high-speed clutch 38 can switch a low-speed mode and a high-speed mode based on switching of the engagement/disengagement of the clutch, wherein the low-speed mode achieves a geared neutral state in which an output shaft 4 is stopped while rotating an input shaft 3 in one direction, and wherein the high-speed mode achieves a state in which deceleration ratio is small compared to the low-speed mode. As one or both of the low-speed clutch 35a and the high-speed clutch 38, a switchable unidirectional clutch capable of mechanically switching the direction of torque to be transmitted is employed. Furthermore, a connection mode (the direction of torque to be transmitted) of the switchable unidirectional clutch is switched by a mechanical means such as a wire in accordance with a selected position of a shift lever.
