To provide a method and system for controlling a switching power supply, which is suitable for a load overcurrent.
The control circuit for a switching power supply reacts to the overcurrent state of the switching supply and guides its operating point to a safe state. The control circuit senses the direction and intensity of a load current 102 and using the sensed information, controls active power switches 104a, 104b, 104c, and 104d of the switching power supply. In the overcurrent state, the switch actively controls a load current to zero, even if the sensed information is delayed or filtered significantly, or even if arriving of the switch signal from the control circuit to the switch is delayed. As a result, the operation of the switching power supply is robust with respect to abnormal load conditions, such as, temporary short circuiting or occurrence of arcing. The hardware of the switching power supply is also better protected.
