To provide a control device for a direct-injection engine which can be shifted between a stratified charge combustion mode and a uniform combustion mode and which utilizes an air flow in a cylinder 2 for stratifying a mixture in the stratified charge combustion mode, securing ignition stability by allowing proper stratification of the mixture independently of a change in transient fill amount of intake air during shift between the combustion modes.
When the engine 1 is shifted from the stratified charge combustion mode into the uniform combustion mode (SA2, SA4), a throttle valve 28 is operated to be closed for lowering the fill amount of intake air in the cylinder 2 (SA5) and fuel pressure is corrected to increase with a change in throttle opening (SA6) to increase the penetrating force of atomized fuel for complementing a lack in strength of a tumbling flow T due to the lower fill amount of air. In this case, the degree of the fuel to be easy to gasify in the cylinder 2 is found from the temperature of water for the engine and the degree of the fuel pressure to be corrected to increase is made greater as the fuel is easier to gasify. It is acceptable that the flow rate of the intake air is increased by the control of a TSCV 32 instead of the correction of the fuel pressure.
