To smoothly torque-assist the drive shaft of an engine by a motor at the time of acceleration and improve the operability by controlling the basic assist quantity so as to gradually increase in the traveling extending from a partial load area to a full load area.
This device is provided with an engine E for outputting the propulsion force of a vehicle and a motor M for generating an auxiliary drive force for assisting the output of the engine E, and the motor M is controlled by a power drive unit 2 so as to supply a power to the motor M or store the regenerated energy obtained by the regenerating operation of the motor M to a battery 3 at the decelerating of the vehicle. The engine E is operable in an intake pipe negative pressure assist mode corresponding to a partial load area and in a throttle assist mode corresponding to a full load area. In the traveling extending from the partial load area to the full load area, the basic assist quantity is gradually increased to ensure a torque assist free from incompatible feeling.
