To slow down combustion and reduce combustion noise by increasing temperature unevenness of a mixed gas at a time of start of fuel decomposition just before reaching self ignition.
An electric control device 70 is applied to an internal combustion engine 10 capable of performing premixed compression self-ignition operation in which mixed gas containing air and fuel injected from an injector 37 is formed in a combustion chamber 25 and the mixed gas ignites by itself and burns by compression during a compression stroke. The electric control device injects high pressure fluid such as air to mixed gas from an air injection valve 38 to increase unevenness of temperature of mixed gas at predetermined timing before time of start of decomposition of fuel during a compression stroke. Consequently, unevenness of temperature of mixed gas at the time of start of decomposition of fuel becomes greater than unevenness of temperature generated by only compressing mixed gas during compression stroke. Consequently, combustion is slowed down and combustion noise is reduced.
