The control device 1 controls an EGR gas quantity EGRACT (steps 52, 55-57), detects combustion state parameters TFACT, SFACT for representing combustion states of a fuel in a cylinder 3b (steps 6, 11), sets target combustion state parameters SFCMD, TFCMD used as targets of the combustion state parameters in accordance with operation states NE, PMCMD of the internal combustion engine 3 (steps 12, 71) and corrects an injection timing TMICMD of the fuel into the cylinder 3b during the transition operation of the internal combustion engine 3 so that the combustion state parameter TFACT becomes equal to a post-correction target combustion state parameter CTFCMD for which the target combustion state parameter TFCMD is corrected based on a comparison result DSF with the combustion state parameter SFACT (steps 76-79).
