To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine that prevents channeling by suppressing unintended creeping discharge using a sub-discharge electrode.
The control device for an internal combustion engine includes an ignition plug 28 that is provided with: a central electrode 52 to which a voltage is applied; an insulator 54 for maintaining the central electrode 52 in an insulated state while the tip of the central electrode 52 is exposed; a main discharge electrode 56 disposed opposite to the central electrode 52 across an air gap; and a sub-discharge electrode 58 disposed near the central electrode 52 and the insulator 54. The control device includes an external EGR device provided with: an EGR passage 38 connecting an intake passage 12 and an exhaust passage 14; and an EGR valve 40 to be used for opening/closing the EGR passage 38. The control device is configured to perform stratification EGR control for opening the EGR valve 40 so that EGR gas can be introduced into a cylinder during a period right before completing air suction into the cylinder of the internal combustion engine 10.
