Procedure involves storing a password to be used to indicate the correct programming or deletion of the memory in an area (206) of memory (104) that is to be deleted or programmed. The password written to memory before deleting or programming is altered by the programming or deletion stage. An alternative is to use a program section (301) stored in memory as a program password. An Independent claim is made for a device for use with the procedure.
