Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a timing for injecting hydrocarbon from a hydrocarbon supply valve to be optimum.SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine, hydrocarbon is intermittently injected from a hydrocarbon supply valve (15) into an engine exhaust passage for eliminating NOfrom exhaust gas. An appropriate interval for injecting the hydrocarbon depending on the operating condition of the engine is calculated on the basis of a predetermined calculation period, and when an elapsed time from previous injection reaches or exceeds a calculated up-to-date optimum injecting interval, the injection of the hydrocarbon from the reductant supply valve (15) is executed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12
