PURPOSE: To detect moving quantity of moving handrails without using rollers or the like.

CONSTITUTION: Plural metal bodies, that is iron members 12, for example, are provided at a specified interval on the back surface of moving handrails 1, and switches 3 are disposed at a constant interval to the iron members 12 to be actuated by the iron members, so moving quantity of the moving handrails 1 is obtained based on ON-signals of the switches 13. Use of special devices to press rollers or the like to the moving handrails, as in conventional devices, can thus be eliminated, structure can be simplified, generation of detection errors by slipping, etc., between the rollers and the moving handrails can be eliminated, and the moving quantity of the moving handrails can be detected at a high precision.
