Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of a turbocompound system and to improve fuel consumption during low load running by a method wherein, based on an engine running state throughout a wide range, energy is recovered in such a state that the turbine efficiency of a power turbine is high state.
SOLUTION: In a turbocompound engine, a power turbine 2 is coupled to the crank shaft 11 of an engine through a shift transmission device by a staged gear speed change mechanism 7 or a shift transmission device by a planetary gear mechanism. An electromagnetic or hydraulic clutch 8 is arranged at the shift transmission device and based on an engine running state, a flow rate of gas through a bypass passage 4 is controlled through control of a bypass valve 5, and rotation of the power turbine 2 and the electromagnetic or hydraulic clutch 8 is controlled by a computer 14. Further, a rotation difference between the input side and the output side of the shaft transmission device is detected. At a point of time when the number of revolutions on the input side attains the number of revolutions of an engine, engagement of the electromagnetic or hydraulic clutch 8 is controlled.
