To improve an output or fuel economy by fully exerting a supercharge function during either of low speed operation and high speed operation of an engine.
An engine 101 is equipped with a fuel injection mechanism which injects a fuel directly into a cylinder 101a; a first turbo-supercharger104 for making supercharge at a time of low speed running of the engine 101 and a second turbo-supercharger105 which makes supercharge at a time of high speed running; a first and a second exhaust gas control valves 106, 107 which make selection of exhaust gas passages related to the first and second turbo-superchargers 104, 105 and control of exhaust gas flow quantities; and a controller 114 controls opening or closing action of the exhaust gas control valves 106, 107 so as to realize stratified charge combustion or homogenous combustion using the first and the second turbo-superchargers 104, 105, corresponding to the running condition of the engine 101.
