PURPOSE: To make the reading/writing operation of an FBA disk device efficient and fast.
CONSTITUTION: One CKD track on a disk 40 is divided into plural FBA blocks of fixed length; and only a record R0 having the home address HA and CKD format of the CKD track is recorded in the head FAB block and respective fields (COUNT field, KEY field, and DATA field) of records R, R2... having the CKD format are recorded in other FBA blocks. Consequently, even when the disk controller 30 receives an instruction for format writing process from the record R1 from a host device 11, the FBA block of HA and R0 is not read out to a cache memory 33 and only the FBA blocks following the record R1 are read out. Consequently, the writing process after the record R1 can easily be performed on a memory and the format writing process can be carried out at a high speed.
