PURPOSE: To control the residence time of char particles and coal particles in a reactor by changing the taper angle of the bottom of a reactor for the rapid thermal decomposition of coal or by changing the diameter of the inlet of gas on the bottom of the reactor.
CONSTITUTION: Coal is ground, pneumatically introduced into the bottom of the straight pipe of a thermal cracking reactor 5 with the aid of a thermal cracking gas or nitrogen, mixed with a high-temperature gas containing CO and H2 at 700-1850°C produced from a gasifier 6 for char and undergoes thermal cracking in a temperature range of 700-1000°C. The char (solid) and the gas/tar vapors which are the products 3 of thermal cracking are discharged from the top of the reactor 5. The reactor 5 has a tapered section at the lower part, and the char resides here and is discharged from the reactor by entrainment on the gas. When the temperature in the reactor is changed, the angle of this tapered section is varied within the range of 45-85 degrees, and/or the diameter of the inlet of gas for char gasification is varied within the range of d/D of 0.05-0.8, whereupon the residence time of the particles can be controlled at the minimum.
