To provide a control system for an internal combustion engine, constructed to introduce low-pressure EGR gas from an exhaust passage downstream of a particulate filter into an intake passage, while quickly reducing the temperature of the particulate filter when the temperature of exhaust gas flowing out of the particulate filter is high.
The control system for the internal combustion engine includes the particulate filter arranged in the exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, and a low-pressure EGR device for introducing part of the exhaust gas as the low-pressure EGR gas from the exhaust passage downstream of the particulate filter into the intake passage. The control system increases the amount of the exhaust gas passing through the particulate filter to cool the particulate filter, when the temperature of the exhaust gas flowing out of the particulate filter is higher than an upper limit value.
