Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control system for an internal combustion engine which enables simplification of match engine output torques between homogeneous combustion and stratified charge combustion in controlling the internal combustion engine, depending on engine loads.
SOLUTION: When an engine 11 is under a homogeneous combustion mode of operation, an intake pressure is used as an engine load and various operation controls are performed depending on the engine load. In contrast, when the engine 11 is under a stratified charge combustion mode, a virtual intake pressure corresponding to an intake pressure when the homogeneous combustion is performed with the accelerator depression amount thereof is calculated. Then the virtual intake pressure is used as the engine load in performing the various operation controls. As a result, one parameter, namely the intake pressure, is used as the engine load for the various operation controls under both combustion modes.
