To facilitate a starting operation of an engine with which ignition control is suspended in correspondence to predetermined stop conditions and restarted in correspondence to a predetermined starting operation by preventing suspension of the ignition control even when the predetermined stop conditions are satisfied in a case when a driver's seating condition cannot be detected.
When an operation mode of a main control unit 160 is switched to a 'stop and start mode' judging from a position of an idling switch 253, vehicle conditions and the like, ignition control is suspended thus stopping an engine automatically. Then, when an accelerator pedal is operated in the stopped state, the engine is restarted automatically. During the stopped state under the 'stop and start mode', a stand-by indicator 256 flashes when a seating sensor 254 detects that a driver is seated and it lights in case of non-seating. Flashing of the stand-by indicator 256 informs the driver that immediate starting is possible by acceleration operation. When the driver is not seated, suspension of the ignition control is prevented even though the predetermined stop conditions are satisfied during running.
