This control unit for an electric rolling stock possesses a rotor position velocity detecting means 6, which detects the position and velocity of the rotor of a permanent magnet synchronous motor 6, a controller 5 which controls the torque of the permanent magnet synchronous motor 6, a stop-deciding means 3 which decides that the permanent magnet synchronous motor 6 has stopped, based on the output of the rotor position and velocity detecting means 4, and an electric brake command generator 2 which generates an electric brake command, based on a brake command and the decision output of a stop-deciding means 3, and gives the command to the controller 5 as a torque command. This control unit can detect the stoppage condition of an electric rolling stock with accuracy, and can stop the electric rolling stock without fail, while widening the application range of the electric brake to its maximum, and the driver can take its stop action, without impairing comfort in driving, also when putting parking brake by an air brake.
