This invention relates to a control unit for hybrid vehicle. The hybrid vehicle is driven by switching between an engine 1 and a motor 3 by engaging and disengaging a clutch 2 interposed between the engine 1 and a continually variable transmission 4, or by both of the engine 1 and the motor 3. The engine torque and the motor torque are predicted and the clutch 2 is disengaged when the sum of the predicted values of the torque exceeds the allowable limit torque of the continually variable transmission 4. This prevents the torque larger than the allowable limit from being applied to the continually variable transmission 4 before it is applied, thereby durability of the continually variable transmission 4 is improved.
