To provide a controller for an automatic transmission capable of suppressing a shock generated when shifting from a backing range to an advance range manually as much as possible.
This controller for the automatic transmission increases back pressure of a first accumulator of a friction engaging device for backing stage and a second accumulator of a friction engaging device for advance stage when shifted from the backing range to a neutral range manually more than that when shifted from the neutral range to the advance range manually. This controller is provided with an acceleration demand detection means for detecting the presence or absence of acceleration demand of a vehicle while shifted from the neutral range to the advance range manually (steps 2, 3, 7, 8) and an accumulator back pressure control means for setting back pressure of each accumulator when the acceleration demand is detected to lower pressure than that when the acceleration demand is not detected (steps 9, 11).
