A controller for an automatic transmission enables fail safe traveling at a predetermined shift position by joining a high clutch 50 and an R35 brake 80 by inhibiting energization of all of LSVs 101 to 105 of a hydraulic control circuit 100 by determining a failure, when the failure occurs, and in the fail safe traveling, the controller also inhibits supply of operation pressure to the high clutch 50 and the R35 brake 80 by the second LSV 102 and fifth LSV 105 when any of the first, third and fourth LSVs 101, 103, and 104 can not stop the supply of operation pressure to a low clutch 40, an LR brake 60 or a 26 brake 70.
