To provide a controller of a compression ignition operation of an internal combustion engine capable of constantly keeping the maximum engine efficiency by adjusting a compression ignition period to the optimum period in accordance with the change of barometric pressure.
This internal combustion engine capable performing the compression ignition operation, comprises a fuel injecting means 10 for directly injecting the fuel into a combustion chamber, a barometric pressure detecting means 28 for detecting the atmospheric pressure or exhaust pressure, and a fuel injection control means 30 for controlling the fuel injection timing for injecting the fuel by driving a fuel injecting means 10 in accordance with the barometric pressure detected by the barometric pressure detecting means 28. The fuel injection control means 30 drives the fuel injecting means 28 in a state that the lower the barometric pressure detected by the barometric pressure detecting means 28 is, the earlier the fuel injection timing is.
