PURPOSE: To improve response for next start by constructing a controller such that speed change control is stopped while maintaining the condition where a continuously variable transmission has maximum torque ratio.

CONSTITUTION: A stop control judging means 116 judges a stop control condition and a speed change control means 11 functions. Operation of a continuously variable speed change judging means 115a is stopped by the speed change control stopping means 117, and the continuously variable speed change device 30 is maintained at maximum torque ratio condition. A mode change judging means 115b is switched to low speed mode or maintained in high speed mode until stop condition or predetermined lowest vehicle speed is realized thereafter it is switched to low speed mode. Consequently, the vehicle can be accelerated smoothly from the maximum torque ratio condition when it starts the next time.
