To reduce a deterioration of a fuel cost due to a continuation of a combustion by assuring a sense of deceleration of a vehicle even if a control for inhibiting fuel cutting is conducted at a decelerating time when an exhaust catalyst temperature is high in order to suppress a deterioration of the catalyst.
A controller for an engine having a plurality of cylinders includes a fuel cutting condition detecting means for detecting that fuel cutting conditions at a vehicle decelerating time are provided, a catalytic temperature detecting means for detecting that the exhaust catalyst temperature is a predetermined temperature or higher, and a control means for pausing at least one of the plurality of the cylinders when it is detected that the fuel cutting conditions are provided and the catalyst temperature is the predetermined temperature or higher. The controller continues the combustion without performing the fuel cutting when the catalyst temperature is higher, and pauses the partial cylinder. Thus, miss firing does not occur even by a small amount of suction air. The deceleration of the vehicle is advanced, and the fuel cost is improved.
