Abstract:

To provide a controller for hybrid electric vehicle that accurately and properly changes an assist map according to the difference in a driving pattern.

The assist map for distributing torque to an engine (2) and an electric motor (6) that are power sources of the hybrid electric vehicle (1) has: an electric motor use area that is set to distribute the torque to the electric motor (6); and an electric motor non-use area that is set not to distribute the torque to the electric motor (6). A vehicle ECU (24) determines a product of use frequency and average power in each element area where the use frequency is a predetermined reference value or above, in a plurality of element areas obtained by dividing the assist map based on the learned driving pattern of a driver, and changes the electric motor use area to include the element area selected such that a total of the products gets close to a standard value.
