Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize a switching timing of a valve overlap corresponding to a combustion mode, and to prevent the deterioration in combustion, by varying a valve overlap amount switching timing corresponding to the combustion mode, between a case of a switching from the homogenous combustion to the stratified combustion, and a case of an inverse switching.
SOLUTION: During the operation of an engine, a driver demand torque is determined in reference to a map on the basis of an accelerator opening and an engine speed in a control unit 20, and then an engine demand torque is added thereto, to calculate a target torque. A combustion mode is then determined from a map prescribing the combustion mode with the engine speed and the target torque as parameters. A switching timing of the valve overlap amount adjusted by a variable valve timing device 13 corresponding to the determined combustion mode in a case when the stratified combustion is switched to the homogenous combustion, is controlled to be earlier than that in a case when the homogenous combustion is switched to the stratified combustion. Whereby the proper combustion can be achieved at all times.
