To improve drivability and riding comfort characteristics by preventing, for example, forcible all cylinder operations by incorrect judgment of sudden deceleration accompanying alteration of operation number of cylinders by preventing an engine stall at sudden deceleration time in association with the deceleration of a vehicle in a variable cylinder internal combustion engine coupled to a transmission and carried in the vehicle.
A controller of the variable cylinder internal combustion engine coupled to the transmission includes number-of-cylinder control means 30 for setting the number of operating cylinders according to an operating state, a throttle valve opening sensor 22, and sudden deceleration detecting means 29 for detecting a sudden detection state from a rate of rotational speed variation. The number-of-cylinder control means 30 sets the number of the operating cylinder to all number of cylinders when the opening of the throttle valve is below a predetermined opening and in the sudden deceleration state, and sets the number of the operating cylinder to the number of the cylinder according to the operating state regardless of the sudden deceleration state when the opening of the throttle valve exceeds a predetermined opening.
