To carry out the subject conversion by optimizing the relative selectivity of ethylene-propylene with an olefinic fraction derived from a steam cracking operation, etc., and further regulating the relative ratio of ethylene and propylene.
At least one olefinic fraction selected from the group consisting of a 4C fraction and a 5C fraction is passed over a catalyst containing at least a metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, palladium and platinum and supported on a carrier at 20-220°C under 1-5 MPa pressure at 0.5-10 h-1 space velocity and molar ratio of H2/diolefin of 0.5-5, preferably 1-3 to carry out a selective hydrogenating step 1 and provide an effluent. The resultant effluent is then etherified with an alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst at 30-130°C temperature in an etherifying step 2 and separated into an ether and an alcohol simultaneously with or after the etherifying step 2 to afford an effluent. A separating step 3 for oxygenated impurities from the effluent is then carried out and propylene is separated after a metathesis step 4 for the effluent with ethylene.
