Title:
CONVERSION OF POLYOLEFIN INTO OIL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3348457
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To convert a polyolefin into a low-boiling oil of a suitable viscosity or a greasy substance in a short time by contacting and reacting the polyolefin with supercritical water in a reactor under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: The autoclave shown in Fig. is composed of a reactor 1 (of a capacity of 100ml), a cap 2, a heater 3, a thermocouple 4, a pressure transducer 5, a temperature controller 6, a recorder 7 and a dynamic strain meter 8. A polyolefin [e.g. crosslinked polyethylene pellet (of a diameter of 2mm) for wires] is stowed into the reactor 1, at least 10vol.% prefrably 15-70vol.%, based on the capacity of the vessel 1, deionized water is introduced into the reactor 1, which is sealed with the cap 2, and the contents are heated up to 375-500°C, maintained at this temperature for 3-12hr and slowly cooled down to room temperature by stopping the heating. The oil phase is extracted with pentane, and the extract is stripped of the pentane to obtain an oil. Thus, the polyolefin is converted into a liquid or greasy substance at a conversion rate of 50-100%. When the reaction temperature is 440°C or above, an aromatic hydrocarbon is mostly formed.
