PURPOSE: To convert a tertiary amine N-oxide into an aldehyde and a secondary amine in high yield under mild conditions by treating a tertiary amine N-oxide in the presence of catalytic quantities of one or more kinds of vanadium derivs.
CONSTITUTION: One or more kinds of vanadium derivs. such as V2O5, NH4VO3, ortho-triethanolamine vanadate, acetylacetone vanadyl, are made present, preferably by 0.0001 to 0.5 molar ratio of vanadium derivs. (calculated as metal) to N-oxide to convert a tertiary amine N-oxide [especially a compd. expressed by the formula] to an aldehyde such as citral. In the formula, R1 to R3 are each an alkyl, an alkenyl, benzyl, and R1 and R2 form a ring, for example, N,N-diethylgeranylamine N-oxide. This method is advantageous because a secondary amine simultaneously produced by the converting reaction can be collected and reused from the water phase in good high yield. Moreover, an unsatd. aldehyde can be directly produced from a conjugate diene and a secondary amine without isolating the intermediate.
