PURPOSE: To raise the cooling ability of red-hot coke, by putting thermocouples at two or more positions of cooling gas blow inlets in a cooling chamber of a dry type quenching device for coke, controlling the blow amount of the cooling gas in order to keep the discharge temperature of coke constant.

CONSTITUTION: Temperatures are measured by the thermocouples 3 fixed to different two or more positions of the cooling gas blow inlets 2 in a cooling chamber of a dry type quenching device for coke, and a temperature distribution is determined. The divergences of the flow adjusting valve 6 are enlarged in order of high temperature, the amounts of the cooling gas are differed, and the flow adjusting valve 8 of an original valve is opened. Consequently, a large amount of the cooling gas is made to flow to a part with high coke temperature and a small amount of the cooling gas is made to flow to a part with low coke temperature, to carry out cooling.
