The cooling type imaging apparatus 1 includes the imaging element 15 having the imaging surface, a cooling means 17 for cooling the imaging element 15 from the back surface side on the opposite side of the imaging surface, a first closed chamber 110 for arranging the imaging surface of the imaging element 15 in the inside, a second closed chamber 120 for arranging the back surface of the imaging element 15 and the cooling means 17 in the inside, vent holes 11, 12 for communicating the first closed chamber 110 and the second closed chamber 120, opening/closing members 19, 20 for opening and closing the vent holes 11, 12, and a control means 21 for controlling the opening/closing operation of the opening/closing members 19, 20. The control means 21 controls the opening/closing members 19, 20 so as to open the vent holes 11, 12 during the cooling operation of the cooling means 17 and to maintain the vent holes 11, 12 in a closed state when the cooling operation of the cooling means 17 is stopped.
