In producing an aromatic vinyl-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid-based copolymer, an aromatic vinyl-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid-based copolymer resin having a high content of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride group is extremely efficiently obtained in a short time in a high yield by carrying out polymerization while dividedly or continuously adding a part (B) of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride in a specific ratio to a mixed solution mainly composed of a part (A) of an aromatic vinyl monomer and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride. The N-substituted maleimide-aromatic vinyl-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride-based copolymer resin having a high content of an N-substituted maleimide group and high heat resistance-imparting effect on an ABS resin, etc., is obtained by imidating the aromatic vinyl-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid-based copolymer resin with a primary amine.
