To efficiently perform copying operation by moving an original placing plate upward in the case of copying material to be copied and turning over pages by moving the original placing plate downward after reading a paper surface copied by a scanner and performing copying.

The paper surface of the material to be copied is placed facing upward on the original placing plate 14 positioned at the lower side of a transparent plate 11, and necessary cloying pages are turned over by a page turning mechanism 23. Then, a cloying paper surface is closely stuck at the transparent plate 11 by moving the original placing plate 14 upward by a jack 150 which is an elevating/lowering mechanism, and the display state of a paper surface is read by the scanner 16 linked with a light source 12. When reading and copying are finished, a new copying page is turned by the page turning mechanism 23 after moving the original placing plate 14 downward. Then, the copying paper surface is closely stuck at the transparent plate 11 by moving the original placing plate 14 upward again, and the display state of the paper surface is read by the scanner 13. Thus, different pages are efficiently copied while maintaining the copying paper surface of the material to be copied facing upward.
