To provide a cordless telephone system and a data communication unit that are provided selectively with a high-speed data communication function depending on purpose and can realize a desired data communication function at a low cost.
A separate data communication unit 120 is removably mounted to a master set 100 connected to a public network 150. A control section 201 monitors the connection state of an interface circuit 200 and when mounting of the data communication unit 120 is detected, a digital input/output port of a wireless circuit 202 and a PIAFS(PHS Internet Access Forum Standard) control section 222 are connected, and a wireless interface for high speed data communications adopting the PIAFS system is selected. Thus, data communications using the data communication unit 120 can be performed with a network 152 such as the external Internet via the master set 100 and the public network 152.
