PURPOSE: To prepare non-allergenic cosmetics by emulsifying a collagen having improved solubility in a specific pH range and obtained by esterifying and/or modifying an atelocollagen with succinic acid.
CONSTITUTION: Atelocollagen is prepared by removing terminal telopeptides from an insoluble collagen obtained from the inner skin layer of cowhide. The side-chain amino groups of the collagen is converted to carboxyl groups by modifying with succinic acid. The isoelectric point of the collagen is shifted to 4-5. By the esterification of the collagen, the isoelectric point is further shifted to 10-11. The resulting succinic acid-modified collagen which is soluble at pH≤4 or pH≥5, and an esterified collagen which is soluble at pH≤9, are added to various cosmetics, O/W emulsions, or W/O lipophilic emulsions to obtain cosmetics having antiinflammatory and moistening effects.
