PURPOSE: The titled fiber for clothing that is composed of a specific polybutylene terephthalate fiber containig a specific amount of carboxyl groups substituted with an alkali metal, thus showing improved moisture absorption and preventing duststicking and pilling.
CONSTITUTION: A polybutylene terephthalate fiber containing more than 80 mole% butylene terephthalate as a recurring unit is dipped in an aqueous solution containing a monomer having vinyl and carboxyl groups such as acrylic or methacrylic acid and the polymerization is effected. Then, the substitution treatment is conducted with an alkali metal salt such as sodium carbonate to produce the objective fiber containing 2.0W40.0, preferably 5.0W20.0×10-4mole/g. fiber of carboxyl groups substituted with an alkali metal.
