To obtain the subject derivative suitable for producing polymers having luminophores on their side chains, by reacting a specific malonic acid derivative with a specific salicylaldehyde.
This derivative is expressed by formula I [R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-30C alkyl, a 6-18C aryl, a 7-24C aralkyl or combined with the adjacent nitrogen into morpholine, piperidine or the like; Z is OR3 (R3 is a 1-30C alkyl, a 6-18C aryl, a 7-24C aralkyl or the like), formula II (R4 and R5 are each a 1-30C alkyl, a 6-18C aryl, a 7-24C aralkyl or at least one of R4 and R5 contains hydroxy) or the like], e.g. 3-(6-hydroxyhexoxycarbonyl)-7-diethylamino-coumarin. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a Meldrum's acid of formula III with a compound of formula R3OH to obtain a malonic acid derivative of formula IV and then by reacting the resultant malonic acid derivative with a salicylaldehyde of formula V in the presence of a catalyst at 50-250°C, occasionally in the presence of a diluent.
