To provide a counterfeit bill detector which has an improved counterfeit bill detection function by determining authenticity of both surfaces of a bill.
A bill 2 is carried in a bill conveying path 3 and enters a discrimination part 1. Both surfaces of the bill 2 are irradiated with ultraviolet rays from LEDs 4 and 5. In this case, the LEDs 4 and 5 alternately radiate ultraviolet rays. The radiated ultraviolet rays are reflected by the surfaces of the bill 2, and are received by photodiodes 6 and 7. The photodiodes 6 and 7 convert received rays to electric signals and transmit the electric signals to a determination part 10. The determination part 10 discriminates an ultraviolet emission pattern of the bill 2 on the basis of the electric signals to determine authenticity of the bill 2.
