PURPOSE: To provide a covered ceramic tool which is excellent in high temperature characteristic and can cut steel and cast iron at a high speed by using Al2O3 base ceramic manufactured at a low price as base material and further improve the wear resistance without lowering of defective resistance of the base material.

CONSTITUTION: A covered ceramic tool comprises a base material composed of 95wt.% or more Al2O3 containing at least one kind among oxides of Mg, Ca, Si, Zr, Cr, Ni, Y and rare earth elements as a sintering assistant, a monolayer or a multi-layer of more than two layers which is formed by at least one kind among metals of 4A group and 5A group of the periodic system and oxides, nitrides, acidic nitride carbides, carbonic nitride, borides, boric nitride of Al and solid solutions of those materials provided on the surface of the Al2O3 base material, and a covering layer having the whole layer thickness average 0.1-5μm.
