This invention provides a novel cross-linked glycopeptide-cephalosporin compound useful as an antibiotic and a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof. This invention also provides a pharmaceutical composition containing the compound, a method of treating a bacterial infection in a mammal, and a process and intermediate useful for preparing the compound. This invention provides a novel cross-linked glycopeptide-cephalosporin compound useful as an antibiotic. The compound has a unique chemical structure in which a glycopeptide is covalently linked to a pyridinium moiety of a cephalosporin. Among other properties, the compound possesses surprising and unexpected potency against Gram-positive bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococci aureus (MRSA).
