PURPOSE: To obtain a crosslinkable copolymer having a specified molecular weight and a specified molecular weight distribution, being excellent in film forming properties and blocking resistance, and being useful for e.g. a coating material for metals, on the like.
CONSTITUTION: There is provided the objective crosslinkable copolymer made from (A) 50-85 mol.% methacrylic acid monomer such as methoxyethyl methacrylate, (B) 15-50 mol.% acrylic acid monomer, such as ethyl acrylate, or styrene monomer, and (C) 0-20 mol.% other copolymerizable monomers, 5-40 mol.% of the total amount of A, B, and C being a functional-group-carrying monomer such as glycidyl acrylate and enabling crosslinking with a crosslinking agent, obtained by bulk or solution polymerization at a temperature of 140-220°C for an average residence time of 2-90 min, and having an average molecular weight of 1,500-6,000 and a weight-average molecular weight/number average molecular weight ratio of 4.0 or below.
