To provide a gel having an excellent ability to absorb a fluid (especially blood) and high biodegradability.

The gel is one being a crosslinked carboxyalkylcellulose (a gel prepared by crosslinking with a polyvalent metal compound or a polyvalent metal ion is excluded), wherein the carboxyalkylcellulose is one having an oxidized form ratio of 79% or more, the oxidized form ratio being expressed by [A/(A+B)]100(%) (wherein A is the number of moles of free carboxyl groups; and B is the number of moles of carboxylate groups). Typically, such gel may be a gel formed by thermal self-crosslinking in the absence of a crosslinking agent.
