PURPOSE: To obtain a novel solid compsn. which functions as an absorbent material by crosslinking a polysaccharide (e.g. a cellulosic material or polygalactomannan) with a specific crosslinker.
CONSTITUTION: This solid absorbent compsn. contains at least one polysaccharide crosslinked with a crosslinker with the proviso that (a) if said at least one polysaccharide comprises a polygalactomannan, said crosslinker is not solely a borate; and (b) if said at least one polysaccharide is not a polygalactomannan, said crosslinker comprises an inorg. metal compd. or an organometallic compd. with the exception that if said polysaccharide comprises cellulose gum, said crosslinker is not an aluminum, chromium, or iron crosslinker. Esp. pref. crosslinkers are aluminum, titanium, and zirconium salts. A chemical or physical means can also be used for crosslinking a polysaccharide.
