To provide a CSD (charge sweep-out) type solid-state image pickup device and its drive method in which a wide range of shutter speed is realized by processing a signal charge and an undesired charge generated by a selected photoelectric conversion element within one horizontal period without overlapping.
A signal charge generated by a selected photoelectric conversion element 103 is read at a charge sweep-out (CSD) channel 105 and the read signal charge is transferred and stored in a storage electrode 106. Furthermore, an undesired charge generated by the selected photoelectric conversion element 103 is read by the CSD channel 105 and the read undesired charge is transferred to a reset drain 11, from which the undesired charge is discharged. The storage of the signal charge and the discharge of the undesired charge are conducted without timewise overlapping in any sequence within one horizontal period. Thus, the sweep-out of the undesired charge is easily realized and the CSD solid-state image pickup device in which a wide range of shutter speed is realized and its drive method are obtained.
