PURPOSE: To precisely obtain pseudo CTL pulses for a VTR which performs a linear search or a VTR, which only performs noiseless still, even though a guard band phase is located at any place during a search by detecting CTL signal phase based on RF signals and a switching pulse, generating pseudo CTL signals based on the above and generating pseudo CTL signals by dividing frequency signal, if it lacks RF signals.

CONSTITUTION: The generator has a microcomputer 4 which detects the amount of drum rotation detected based on the head switching signal that switches plural rotary heads and the amount of deviation of CTL signals based on reproduced signals from the plural rotary heads, a frequency signal generating circuit which detects the rotation frequency of a capstan motor and a 1/N counter 6 which generates pseudo CTL signals by dividing the frequency signals. And based on the compensation signals from the microcomputer 4, the phase of CTL signals generated by the 1/N counter 6 is compensated.
