Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a culture method for marine microalgae enabling a stable proliferation of algal bodies and exhibiting a clear increase in docosahexaenoic acid content while no other highly unsaturated fatty acid than docosahexaenoic acid is produced.

CONSTITUTION: An alga belonging to marine microalgae and capable of producing docosahexaenoic acid is cultured and docosahexaenoic acid is obtained from the proliferated algal bodies of the marine microalga. In this process, the culture medium contains at least one selected from the group consisting of (1) corn steep liquor, (2) corn steep liquor and enzyme-digested animal meat extract, (3) yeast extract and (4) skim milk, as an organic nitrogen source.
