To provide a currency identification device capable of suppressing a reduction in identification processing accuracy of currency.SOLUTION: A currency identification device includes a line sensor 62 that acquires image information of currency C being conveyed, and a control device 45 that determines the presence or absence of foreign matter or the presence or absence of bit missing in the line sensor 62 on the basis of a comparison result between a first output value of the line sensor 62 acquired in a state where no foreign matter exists or a state where no bit missing exists in a detection range of the line sensor 62, and a second output value as a current output value of the line sensor 62.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
