Abstract:

To make a cushioning material applicable to the environments which are exposed to the shock waves from the explosive substance or the seismic source by preparing a mixture having a specific density, porosity and compression strength.

This cushioning material has a density of 0.48-2.56 g/cc, a porosity of 20-80% and a compression strength of 500-30,000 psi and can be produced by casting the following mixture : (1) 6-40 wt.% of portland cement; (2) 10-50 wt.% of silica fume; (3) 10-50 wt.% of hollow type filling particles; (4) 0.05-35 wt.% of fibers; and (5) 9-35 wt.% of water. The hollow type filling particles are thicker than the cement particles and, for example, glass bubbles or the like. The fibers may be organic, glass or metal. The organic fiber can control the reaction of the cushioning material to fire thereby inhibiting the occurrence of release, the glass fiber can increase the toughness and improve the tensile strength and the metallic fiber can increase the toughness and the density of the cushioning material.
